Description

In this work by the Swiss artist Dirk Koy, one gets the impression that the laws of physics have been suspended. The found-footage video shows the demolition of the AfE high-rise in Frankfurt am Main in 2014 as a continuous loop with no beginning or end. The venue for the presentation has been deliberately chosen: the sintering plant at the Völklinger Hütte, once one of the most modern facilities of its kind, was left to fall into disrepair following its closure in 1986. At the time, hardly anyone could have imagined that this site – once the most modern sintering plant in the world – would one day be restored as a machine-filled space open to the public. In his video works, Dirk Koy frequently uses existing footage, which he transforms through minimal interventions, thereby disrupting and recalibrating viewers’ visual habits. Dirk Koy was awarded this year’s Prix Ars Electronica for his innovative artistic practice.
