Renate Bertlmann
Born in Vienna, Austria in 1943. She lives and works in Vienna.
Work
In her work Hidden Parameter, Renate Bertlmann uses the cool, objectifying aesthetics of X-ray images to question feminist themes of visibility, intimacy, and control over female bodies.
The objective X-ray image is manipulated: the female anatomy is augmented with a spike. The vulva thus becomes a symbol of resistance.Ratherthanappearingasamedicallyaccuratepassiveobject, thefemalebodyispresentedasanactivesiteofpowerandprotest.
