Frida Kahlo

Work

In The Broken Column (1944), Frida Kahlo visualises her own physical and psychological suffering by depicting her upper body. Her body is forced into a metal corset and covered in agonising nails that extend down her weakened right leg, which was affected by polio she contracted as a child. The damaged ancient Greek column represents Kahlo's spine, which was badly injured in a 1925 accident, leaving her bedridden for much of her life.
