30 years of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte

As the highlight of the 30th anniversary year of the  World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte, the former ironworks will be celebrating UNESCO World Heritage Day with a big weekend of festivities. On 1 and 2 June, numerous German World Heritage Sites and international partners from the Greater Region will present themselves at the World Heritage Market, which will pitch its tents on the Ore square. We are delighted that so many different UNESCO World Heritage sites have confirmed their participation, from Potsdam and Bremen to Trier, the Erzgebirge mining region, Regensburg and the Limes.

And, of course, there will be a real celebration on both days: With music, a children's programme, five exhibitions all over the site and a wide range of culinary delights. Guided tours offer exciting glimpses behind the scenes at the Völklinger Hütte, in particular into newly developed areas such as the dry gas cleaning plant, the blast furnace control room, the sinter round cooler and the concrete coal tower.

From adventurous expeditions across our site, concerts, theatre and music events to exploring new destinations while chatting to representatives of other World Heritage Sites, the festival weekend should have something for everyone.

National UNESCO World Heritage Day

In cooperation with the German UNESCO Commission and the German World Heritage Association, the central event of the UNESCO World Heritage Day for Germany 2024 will take place at the Völklingen Ironworks on 2 June. World Heritage Day will be opened nationwide at 11 a.m. with a ceremony featuring speeches by the President of the German UNESCO Commission, Maria Böhmer, and the Prime Minister of the Saarland, Anke Rehlinger.

In the afternoon, there will be a panel discussion on the role of World Heritage sites as extracurricular learning spaces for sustainability, peace and cosmopolitanism, with the participation of Christine Streichert-Clivot, Minister of Education of the Saarland and President of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany.
