FORGE - Video Mapping Festival
Making the ironworks glow and the invisible visible — that is what the artists of the FORGE Video Mapping Festival are realizing as part of the Interreg project GRACE. The result is site-specific video art that looks beyond the surface of the Völklinger Hütte, revealing its underlying structures and opening up new perspectives.
From 29 to 31 May, the seven films created specifically for the festival will be screened in a spectacular open-air setting on the ore yard, casting an innovative light on the iconic industrial complex of this World Heritage Site. They will be complemented by a contribution from the Apollon festival Saarbrucken and a special programme by Jérémie Bellot, who has previously projected onto the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame in Paris and is also a curator of the Constellations Festival in Metz. The FORGE Video Mapping Festival promises a magical and inspiring night.
Doors open at 9 pm each evening; admission is free.
In the Interreg project GRACE, 25 cultural institutions and stakeholders from the Greater Region comprising Saarland, Lorraine, Luxembourg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Belgium are committed to developing new forms of cultural education involving artists.

Workshops
In the week leading up to the FORGE Video Mapping Festival, the participating artists will be offering workshops. You are welcome to register for the workshops via email. Please send us the name of the workshop you would like to attend, your contact information, and the number of people you will be bringing.
The meeting point for all workshops is the main entrance of the water tower.
Tuesday, May 26th
|
2 pm to 6 pm |
The workshop invites participants to explore the Völklingen Ironworks through its sounds – during a guided soundwalk. Afterwards, participants will collect their own recordings in groups, which will then be combined to create a collective sound portrait. |
|
4:00 PM to 5:30 PM |
In this workshop, participants capture their own movements using motion capture and transfer them to avatars within a 3D model of the Völklingen Ironworks. This results in an animated camera movement as a video – a hands-on introduction to digital art, no prior knowledge required. |
Wednesday, May 27th
|
(FULL) |
Sketches, rubbings and photos are used to create an individual collage that shows the place from different perspectives – without any prior knowledge. |
Thursday, May 28th
|
4 pm to 6 pm: |
Themes explored in the work at the ironworks are developed through collages and sound recordings. The results are then digitally processed and collectively reflected upon in relation to questions concerning the Anthropocene and future potential. |
Friday, May 29th
|
10 am to 3 pm (including breaks) |
As a counterpoint to the facade projection, we shift the focus to shared exploration: Drawing inspiration from Lucius Burckhardt’s ‘promenadology’, we explore the ironworks by taking detours, observing, describing and reinterpreting the place. In slowing down and revealing, different perspectives on work, technology, and the present emerge. |
|
3 pm to 7 pm |
Through sound walks, listening exercises and the use of contact microphones, materials, architecture and resonances are made audible and explored experimentally together. |
|
3 pm to 7 pm: |
A sensory journey of discovery using video mapping: from the impressions gathered, participants work together to create collages, projections and sound fragments, which are then combined—both in analogue and digital form—to form a collective mapping project. |
