Work

In her work Hidden Parameter, Renate Bertlmann uses the cool, objectifying aesthetics of X-ray images to question feminist themes of visibility, intimacy, and control over female bodies.

The objective X-ray image is manipulated: the female anatomy is augmented with a spike. The vulva thus becomes a symbol of resistance. Rather than appearing as a medically accurate passive object, the female body is presented as an active site of power and protest.
